What You Should Never Mix: A Safe Guide to Natural Cleaners

Published 2026-10-15

Natural cleaning ingredients are popular because they are cheap and simple. But "natural" does not always mean "safe to combine". Some mixtures can release harmful fumes or simply cancel each other out.

The golden rules

Combinations to avoid

Surfaces that do not like acid

Vinegar and lemon juice are acidic. Do not use them on natural stone such as marble or granite, on unsealed grout, or on some hardwood floors, because they can dull or damage the surface. Always check the manufacturer's advice for your surfaces.

What simple ingredients are good for

Plain warm water and a little dish soap handle most everyday jobs. Baking soda makes a gentle scrub for sinks and pans. A diluted vinegar solution can help with limescale on some surfaces, such as a kettle or shower screen, if the manufacturer says it is safe.

A word on claims

Household ingredients can clean, but you should not assume they disinfect or kill germs. If you need disinfection, use a product that is labeled for it and follow the directions.
