How Often to Clean Your Oven, Dishwasher and Washing Machine
Published 2026-10-15
Appliances do a lot of work, and they get dirty too. The right schedule depends on how much you use them, and your manual is always the best guide. Here is a general framework.
First, check the manual
Every appliance has different cleaning needs. Look in your manual for cleaning instructions, intervals and any parts you should not touch. If you do not have the paper manual, search for it online using the model number.
Oven and stovetop
- After spills: wipe when it is cool.
- Every month or two: clean the racks and the oven door glass.
- Seasonally: a deeper clean, following the maker's instructions. Ventilate well if your oven has a self-clean cycle.
Dishwasher
- Weekly: clear the drain area and wipe the door seal.
- Monthly: check and clean the filter and the spray arms.
- Leave the door slightly open after use so it can air out.
Washing machine
- After each wash: wipe the door seal and leave the door open.
- Monthly: clean the detergent drawer.
- Every few months: run a cleaning cycle if your manual recommends one.
Other appliances
- Microwave: wipe weekly.
- Fridge: clear and wipe the shelves every few months.
- Kettle and coffee machine: descale following the manufacturer's advice.
Safety
Unplug appliances before cleaning inside them where the manual says to. Never mix cleaning products, especially bleach with vinegar or ammonia.
