Most people who kill houseplants do it with kindness, usually too much water. Here is how to get started and keep your plants healthy.
Many nurseries label plants as easy or low-maintenance. Common beginner choices include pothos, snake plant, spider plant, ZZ plant and peace lily. Always check the plant label or ask the seller about its needs, because every plant is different.
Light matters more than anything else. Before you buy, look at where the plant will live. A south-facing window is bright, while a north-facing room is dim. Choose a plant to match the spot instead of hoping it adapts.
Push a finger about an inch into the soil. If it is dry, water. If it is still damp, wait. Water until it runs out of the drainage hole, then empty the saucer so the roots are not sitting in water. Overwatering is the most common problem.
A pot without holes traps water and rots roots. If you love a decorative pot, keep the plant in a plain pot with drainage and place it inside.
Most houseplants need little feeding. Follow the instructions on any plant food you buy, and repot only when roots are crowding the pot or growing out of the bottom.
A simple log with each plant's name, location, watering days and notes helps you spot patterns. We do not claim plants will purify your air or do anything medical. They are simply nice to have.
